Every state has different laws and regulations. Make sure you check with Illinois Board of Barber & Cosmotology to be exact. Here in California, you actually don't need a license in order to do makeup or to become a freelance makeup artist. A freelance makeup artist works for themselves and is pretty much like an independant contractor. You make your own fees and rates, buy your own products, market yourself, and pretty much a self entrepreneur.

Also, California only requires you to obtain a license only if you tend or plan to work in a salon. So once again, make sure you double check with your state, but most likely, you will be fine. It's nothing serious. Just make sure to keep things sanitize and clean and have fun!

well unfortunately it is required for you to have a license if your planing to do it for a living...but if you are just doing it as a one time thing it shouldn't be a problem unless some one rats you out and state board will banned you from ever getting your license and fine you as well.
