The Mirena is the most effective reversible method of birth control.Mirena does not prevent STD's, so yes you should still wear a condom.
The Mirena is very effective at preventing pregnancy, but not STD's.
I had the Mirena for approximately 4 months, and I never stopped bleeding while I had it. Other than that, it was great - but it just didn't work out for me. Hopefully it goes better for you!
EDIT: I agree with Pippin below. You can only have an IUD if you have already had a baby. My friend insisted on having an IUD inserted prior to having children, and she had SEVERE pain for over 2 years because of it. Once removed, it took her 4+ years to get pregnant. You should speak to your doctor about this.
